Playhouse Youth Theatre
Welcome to the Howmet Playhouse Youth Theatre page,
a special page devoted to all things related to Youth Theatre at the Playhouse
White Lake Youth Theatre
Open to 10 through 18 year old actors
The Playhouse hosts an incredible summer workshop through the seasoned “White Lake Youth Theatre” program which has given young actors of the White Lake area a stage to perform on and a summer project to look forward to for many years. Summer 2009 was no exception as we created an exciting and educational theatre experience for White Lake youth actors with our WLYT production of The Legend of Scarface and Bluewater by Blanche Marvin.
For Summer 2010 the Youth Theatre will be performing Skupper Duppers, a play is about the schooner Skupper Dup, a voyage in search of culture, some adventure, excitement, and folklore.
The White Lake Youth Theatre is open to all actors aged 10 through 18 who can commit to the full schedule of June and July rehearsals. A full rehearsal schedule will be available at the time of casting. Students who are uncertain of their schedules should plan to come to the audition and explain their conflicts on their audition sheets.
Do you have questions or concerns? If so, please contact Cindy Beth Davis, Playhouse Manager, at 231-894-4048, or contact her via the Contact Form on this website.
We hope that you can be involved! If you or someone you know is interested in assisting with WLYT, through costuming, set dressing, props creation, general crowd control for performances, or our Adopt a Costume program, please contact Cindy Beth as described in the preceding paragraph. We’d love to have you and would appreciate the help!

Performing Arts Workshop 2010
Performing Arts Workshop During Spring Break, April 5-8
We joined forces with the Nuveen Center for the Arts again to create a fun-filled PAW (performing arts workshop) over Spring Break, April 5-8, 2010. Students got a chance to participate in many aspects of theatre performance, including drama, dance, lighting, set design, audition skills, and makeup and costuming. Each subject was taught by a specialist in that field, creating a well rounded performing arts experience!
Performing Arts Workshops 2009
The Howmet Playhouse hosted its first ever Educational Arts session, Performing Arts Day Camp, in collaboration with the Nuveen Center for the Arts. We held this exciting workshop in April 2009 for Muskegon County schools, and it was a huge success! We used all of our scholarship donations and four students were able to attend free of charge. Students whose families could afford to pay an instructor’s fee paid a mere $25 for four days and nine hours of intensive theatre instruction. We taught this course Monday through Thursday and our twenty-five theatre students received hands-on experience in the areas of:
- drama and improvisation
- dance choreography
- audition techniques
- set design and set painting
- stage combat choreography
- lighting
We hired talented local professionals from each of these fields, and in turn students received specialized theatre and technical theatre instruction for only $2.75 an hour! Many thanks to our wonderful instructors who helped to make this event a reality:
- Janelle Mair, Nuveen Center Director and Facilitator of the collaboration
- Alice Gambel, Audition Techniques, Instructor/Director for Nuveen Center Theatre
- Cindy Beth Davis, Acting and Improvisation, Howmet Playhouse Manager
- Abby Kirk, Choreographer. Releve Dance Owner, Whitehall
- Chris Farrar, Lighting and Stage Combat
- Andrew Zahrt, Lighting Design and History
- Missy Morrow, Set design and scenic painting, Local Artist/Instructor for Nuveen Center
